Yes, Curse You has it right. GTA:SA(others maybe too ) has the same system. Most racing games have the same system. It works.

by the way:
i think you can still download the GW client for free, without having bought the game - you just don't have an account...
so anet could even make the basic client able to view replays without having an account. then you could advertise GW and its gameplay to your friends very easily!
of course if they never played GW they won't understand what happens on the screen

Very good idea there Halbard...Although I don't see people downloading ~3GB just to see some random obs matches.
